The main two functions of a catalyst are to
1) Decrease reaction activation energy
This is accomplished by providing the reaction with an alternate pathway which does not require as much activation energy.
2) Decrease reaction time
This is done by decreasing the activation energy as well as arranging substrate molecules in a manner in which they are easily broken down.
