To find this we need to look at the entire equation.

-7 1/8 - -9 1/2

When we have two negatives like this, we need to turn it into an addition sign.

-7 1/8 + 9 1/2

Now we need to give them common denominators

-7 1/8 + 9 4/8

Now we can simply add the two parts

2 3/8
